Airmee is one of Sweden’s first and fastest growing last-mile delivery innovators. Their ambition is to offer the world’s most environmentally friendly delivery options while delivering packages faster than anyone else. The customer base has grown rapidly since the start and Airmee’s same-day and express deliveries are increasingly common in checkout.

With Black Week around the corner, we took the opportunity to feel Airmee on the pulse and hear more about how same-day and express deliveries work, and what the real difference is!

You have the ambition to be the fastest in same-day delivery, and your express deliveries have a time window of only 1–2 hours. What conditions are required to succeed with such a delivery?

- Above all, a technical platform is required that can optimize all bids and their routes in real time and automate many of the work processes that today take place manually by the traditional logistics companies. This is something we have developed over several years and which is based on world-leading research.

It also requires close cooperation with the e-retailers that offer fast home deliveries, because it is us together who must exceed the expectations of our customers. We have seen an incredibly high level of customer satisfaction among consumers of our deliveries, which has resulted in higher customer loyalty and higher conversions in the e-retailer’s checkouts.

Same-day and express delivery sound almost the same, what is the difference?

Our definition of same-day deliveries is that they are delivered on the same day as they arrive at one of our terminals, that they pass our terminals is also a prerequisite for us to call it same-day. The express deliveries are sent directly from the warehouse to the end consumer without passing our terminal, this is done in 1–2 hours from the time we receive the order booking.

Which vehicles are used for different time windows?

- For our evening deliveries that run between 17–22, deliveries with electric vehicles such as electric cars and cargo bikes are a priority. Our mission is to offer the best delivery experience on the market while helping to create better cities. Our main focus is to minimize emissions but also by contributing to a better climate for people’s health. To reduce noise levels, we therefore mainly deliver by cargo bike in Stockholm’s inner city. It has also proven to be much more efficient than cars.

Tell us more about your route-optimizing technology!

- Gladly! We can talk about this for any length of time, it’s one of the cornerstones of Airmee.

Airmee’s technology is based on several years of research and has been developed to reduce last-miles’ negative impact on the climate by optimizing logistics flows in large cities. Our routes are automatically generated in real time in our system. The routes generated balance a wide variety of factors such as; maximized use of each vehicle, minimized travel time between stops, use of the right type of vehicle in the right area (eg cargo bikes in the inner city) and traffic conditions, while of course it is about ensuring that the consumer receives his delivery on time.

These and many more factors enable us to deliver both small and large goods in an efficient manner and with a low climate impact.

If external factors, such as traffic, are taken into account, how fast is an average delivery?

Our goal is to deliver everything we receive to our terminals the same day we receive it. For express deliveries, we deliver within 1–3 hours from the time the order arrives to us. Our fastest delivery took place in 9 minutes with an electric car! The customer was very surprised to say the least.

What distance from the store or warehouse to the customer’s address is maximum so that you are guaranteed to have time to deliver in a maximum of 2 hours?

In Stockholm, we have deliveries within 2 hours for all consumers who live in the inner city or suburbs such as Bromma, Nacka and Solna. It is required that the delivery can be picked up from a warehouse or store within the same area to guarantee a delivery of 2 hours.

You deliver today mainly in larger cities, but want to deliver quickly and environmentally friendly to consumers all over the world, can you tell us something about your expansion plans?

We have started to expand in medium-sized cities in Sweden such as Linköping and Växjö and we will continue to expand our delivery area aggressively in the Nordic region in the coming year. In our long-term plans, however, we see the Nordic region as a pilot market where we can test new services and refine the technical platform. Our plan is to grow globally through our technical platform and connect e-retailers with logistics companies and consumers.

How do you get ready for this year’s Black Week?

We fully tune our processes and have also made investments in new infrastructure such as hubs for transhipment and terminals. We are also increasing our delivery capacity by opening up more cities for weekend deliveries in order to continue to keep our promise of the market’s fastest deliveries with the highest delivery quality.
